The Language of Music

Moods and emotions: everyone has them. That is probably one of the main reasons that the arts, such as music and painting, connect with people. As I get older and develop as a musician and consumer of music, it has become crystal clear to me that music is meant to evoke visceral emotions in the listener - essentially.

The tones and moods established in these pieces are what make people cry when they listen to Ed Sheeran, or head bang and mosh to Slayer. For example, when I listen to The Contortionist, I get goosebumps and I feel a rush of adrenaline. I don't know why ... maybe it's because I'm a nerdy prog fan that practically worships Joey Baca's drumming. I don't know. On the other hand, more synth oriented ambient artists (S U R V I V E and Aphex Twin) can spark questions and allow your mind to wander to the edges of the cosmos.

The trademark qualities that those artists have are vastly different, but still appeal to many. This concept is one that I have been exploring with my songwriting. I'm still learning about the whole "composing" thing, but so far - it's seeming pretty promising. Keep an eye and ear out for some new, original material soon.

The older I get, and the more show experiences I gather, one concept becomes blatantly clear to me. Larger shows or higher profile...
